Setting goals : the SMART method :

Again and again objectives ... And yes! When you go to the bakery, it's to buy bread. When you go to the gym, it's to maintain your body. You don't go without a reason.

Objectives are the drivers of what we undertake. A goal is a lighthouse that lights you in the dark to find your way and not get lost. It lets you know where you are going and why you are going there.

How do you set effective goals and how do you keep them ?

For this I advise you to use the SMART method :

Specific
Measurable
Accessible
Realistic
Temporal

Specific :

Your objective must be clear and precise. It must be quick and easy for you to understand it.

For example: I want to reach level B1 (intermediate) in French.

Measurable :

Your objective must be measurable. That is, you must be able to see what you have already accomplished and what you still have to do.

For example: With the online level tests, I can see my progress.

Accessible :

Your goal must be a challenge, a challenge that gives you the motivation to reach it and that it is possible, feasible to achieve.

For example: I am learning French with a specialized teacher, which will allow me to reach my goals more easily and quickly.

Realistic :

One goes with the other: for your goal to be attainable, it must also be realistic. You can take it step by step and set yourself increasingly difficult goals. An unrealistic, unfeasible goal will make you lose motivation and will discourage you.

For example: I spend at least 40 minutes of my day learning French.

Temporal :

Your objective must be time-limited. You must set a deadline to see your progress, which must be as realistic and attainable as possible.

For example: I want to reach level B1 in French in 6 months.

💡 This method is very effective in achieving your goals and will allow you to be very organized in your learning.

Integrating your goals into everyday life

Organization is of the utmost importance when you want to learn a foreign language. You have to be methodical, regular and organized.

Indeed, it will not be effective if you devote, for example, 5 hours of French once every two months. Your learning must be regular. It must be integrated into your everyday life if you want to quickly succeed in mastering the language of MoliĂšre.

You're probably wondering how to integrate your goals in French into your daily life.

I've got the solution for you !

I propose a typical day that subtly and effectively integrates moments conducive to learning French.

⏰ 7am - Wake up / preparation :
Get dressed, eat breakfast, brush your teeth while listening to the radio or a podcast in French.

🚘 8am - Travel to your work or school :
Listen to music in French during your trip. Guess what? I've made you some great playlists of French songs on Spotify for every moment of your day.

đŸ’Œ 9am to 5pm - At work / at school :
Try to make the most of the opportunities that allow you to speak, write, read and even think in French.

🚘 5pm - Return journey :
Read a blog or newspaper article in French. If you drive, listen to music or a podcast in French.

đŸ‘©đŸ»‍đŸ’» 6 p.m. - At home :
Spend 1 hour to take a French course online.

đŸ™…đŸ»‍♀ 7pm - A break is necessary :
Take a break, clear your head and forget French for a while. You will also have time to go about your business, see a friend or relax.

🎬  9pm - Evening :
Watch a series in French with or without subtitles.

There's no point in torturing yourself and spending hours trying to learn French without being organized and methodical. You should start your learning by setting yourself SMART goals : Specific, Measurable, Accessible, Realistic and Time-based.

Also devote small moments of French in your day. Special moments are those that allow you to do two things at once, such as when you are on public transport. Often, you feel like you're wasting time in these moments, so use them to improve your French. Make these moments useful to your learning.

If you motivate yourself every day to follow your goals and your schedule, you will very quickly see immense progress and it will become a habit, and even a pleasure.
